Pots by artists from Hermannsburg, west of Alice Springs, feature in a landmark exhibition at Adelaide’s JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design.
Called From the Earth , it is the first time ceramics from remote indigenous centres have been brought together.
JamFactory managing director Stephen Bowers said interest in ceramics has been growing in Aboriginal communities since the early 1990s.
“This is a ground-breaking exhibition and we’re hoping it will position this work more firmly on the national map and be a point of reference in the future,” he said.
Artists represented hail from Hermannsburg, Ernabella, the Tiwi Islands and Alice Springs.
The artists from Alice Springs are part of Alice Springs Pottery, a program established by JamFactory for artists forced to relocate from traditional homelands for social or health reasons.
