Tiwi Design is the oldest art centre on the Tiwi Islands founded in 1969 by Bede Tungatalum and Giovanni Tipungwuti. Tiwi Design consists of a gallery show room, painting and screen printing studio, carving and pottery shed. Many of the artsists at Tiwi Design have been associated with the art centre for over 30 years with their work held in all major Australian public gallery collections. Jean Baptiste Apuatimi is the most senior and well recognised artist on the Tiwi Islands currently one of the ˜big guns’ at the National Gallery of Australia Culture Warriors exhibition. Master potter John Patrick Kelantumama leads the pottery studio and Master Printer Osmond Kantilla has been screenprinting tiwi designs on fabric since the 70’s.
