Are footy stars Michael O’Loughlin and Leon Davis represented in this year’s Telstra Aboriginal Art Award?
Or are they figures from a bygone era, perhaps Derek Kickett and Wally Lovett – or Robbie Ah Mat, who played for both Sydney and Collingwood?
Territorians will have to wait until the art award opens in August to see Dinni Kunoth Kemarre’s carved works Dinni’s Dream Team for themselves. Almost all the 93 finalists selected for this year’s award have arrived at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT to be treated, stretched, strapped and hung for the prestigious exhibition.
And this year’s award may avoid the infighting of 2008 – Malgorzewicz said no works from John Ioannou’s controversial Irrunytju art centre have been selected. Malgorzewicz, back to her job at the helm of MAGNT after the removal of Apolline Kohen, said the selection panel’s decisions were based purely on “quality”.
