What is Art (with a capital ‘A’) all about when you’re under 10 years old? Find out at the Gympie Regional Gallery with a fun and stimulating exhibition titled thinking making which is now on show.

Explore a variety of age appropriate activities and resources that act as jump-off points, into discovering and making new arts experiences of your own. A little library of carefully chosen stories give great insights and practical ideas to enlivening your experience, which is designed at ˜child-height’ and includes a mini-art centre where children can discover, draw and play, inspired alongside the artworks themselves.

Included in the exhibition is Kenneth Thaiday Snr’s Torres Strait Land and Sea Dhari Headdress is a traditional dance-machine made from both modern and traditional materials.

Susan Doherty’s Flora Reef is an imaginative woven reconstruction of the reef between Cairns and Innisfail using textiles, natural fibres and found objects. Her concerns are sustainability of the reef and using recycled materials.

Children can explore the touch and feel box full of interesting textures.

Kylie Burke’s sculpture Not from Here. The artist uses found objects to create a tree assembled from old furniture parts and whacky souvenirs.

thinking making has been designed by Artslink Queensland, in collaboration with Cairns Regional Gallery, especially to inspire and support communities in producing their own quality children’s art projects.

Exhibition Touring Program Director, Lisa Beilby, says, “With this exhibition, we wanted to supply a way into understanding artists’ ideas and making art for children. We hoped to do this by means of interactive art-making stations, by dedicated interpretation of the artworks themselves and by furnishing multi-tasking teaching and talking tools and great templates and ideas for adults to design their own projects in the future”.

thinking making will be on view throughout the rest of the school holidays at the Gympie Regional Gallery until Saturday 2nd February. It is situated at 39 Nash Street, just up the hill from Goldfields Plaza with opening hours from Tuesday to Saturday 10am “ 4pm. Phone 5481 0733 for any further information.
