The major auction houses are offering the strongest catalogues of Aboriginal art since indigenous paintings found their way from Turkey Creek to the mainstream.

Names such as Rover Thomas and Emily Kame Kngwarreye excite the art market as much as Brack, Whiteley, Williams and Drysdale.

Deutscher and Hackett’s first sale in Melbourne on March 25 is also its inaugural Aboriginal auction, with a Kngwarreye expected to bring $150,000 to $200,000.

Nothing like the $1 million that was paid for Kngwarreye’s Earth’s Creation at Lawson-Menzies in 2007.

But that was a painting that extended Aboriginal dreaming from Kngwarreye’s Utopia community in the Northern Territory to a universal beginning.
