Walyalup (Fremantle) artist duo Stephen Brameld and Jay Staples, recipients of the 2024 Art Leven Award as part of the Paddington Art Prize,  are to be featured at Art Leven.

It’s something of a change for the gallery which was once Cooee, and is the second presentation of non-indigenous artists since the relaunch in 2023.

Owner, Mirri Leven, says, “The gallery’s primary focus will remain on First Nations art, however, these exhibitions are bringing new perspectives – how the world we inhabit is expressed through each artist’s unique brushstrokes and process.

“Stephen Brameld and Jay Staples have mastered the practice of collaborative painting. Though extensively exhibited on the West Coast, this is the artists’ first solo presentation in Gadigal (Sydney). The unique and almost frantic way these artists collaborate, painting simultaneously to create one cohesive and beautifully balanced artwork, is quite remarkable.”

The opening is at Art Leven, 17 Thurlow Street, Redfern, 3 April from 6-8pm.
