Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Desley Boyle today announced the Heart Foundation’s East Coast Aboriginal Art Exhibition would be expanded to Townsville and Mount Isa with the help of a Bligh Government grant.
Last year the East Coast Aboriginal Art Exhibition showcased more than 45 artworks including paintings, clay work and sculptures during a two-week exhibition held at both the State Library of Queensland and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Ms Boyle said.
The funding announced today will enable the exhibition to travel to Townsville and Mt Isa in October.
It also means the exhibition can be expanded with invitations being extended to emerging Indigenous artists as well as established artists.
Eight winners and 16 runners-up will be selected to have their artwork featured at the exhibition. The art works will also be available to purchase.
Additionally, the winning artworks will be featured in the Emerging Artist 2011 calendar which will be available for sale at the exhibition and via the exhibition website.
This is great news for residents of Townsville and Mount Isa who will now have the opportunity to visit this wonderful art exhibition.
The exhibition has been running since 2007 and its purpose is to raise awareness of Indigenous health issues and generate valuable funds for Indigenous heart health programs by showcasing the work of prominent and talented Indigenous Queenslanders.
The Bligh Government is providing support to the exhibition through a one-off grant of $5000.
