Gloria Petyarre is one of the most successful indigenous artists from Utopia, a region 270kms northeast from Alice Springs. Gloria’s seven sisters are also artists, such as the well-known Kathleen Petyarre, Nancy Petyarre, Violet Petyarre and Ada Bird. Like her sisters, Gloria was traditionally raised in her country of Aknangkere and has acquired great knowledge concerning her ancestors, country and Dreamings. Gloria paints Bush Medicine, Mountain Devil, Awelye and Atnangkere Growth.
Gloria first gained recognition as an artist working in Batik in the late 70s and took up the medium of canvas in 1988. By 1991 she had her first solo exhibition in Sydney followed by another one in New York. In 1999 Gloria was awarded the prestigious Wynne Prize for her Bush Medicine piece Leaves Blowing in the Wind. Today Gloria is a well travelled artist with her work represented in all State Galleries of Australia as well as international public & private collections.
