Telstra’s sponsorship of the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards is secure, but the format of the awards is not. Focus groups are being run around the country as the NT News reports:
MAGNT acting director Apolline Kohen said there would be discussions held about the “future direction” of the awards.
The award was rocked this year by the withdrawal of six desert art centres in protest against the practices of some entrants.
It led to a debate about entry to the awards, and signing up to a code of conduct has been mentioned as a possible condition of entry.
The museum will hold a series of forums with people working in the Aboriginal art industry.
