The Hamburger Bahnhof Museum for the Present, Berlin, will present the exhibition Face Up – Contemporary Art from Australia from the 2 October 2003 to 4 January 2004 as part of artsaustralia berlin 03, a program of contemporary Australian art in Berlin. Curator, Dr Britta Schmitz, has selected 14 leading Australian artists, including Patricia Piccinini, who represented Australia at this year’s Venice Biennale, Susan Norrie, Rosemary Laing and Simryn Gill.
The exhibition features 36 painting, video/DVD, photography and sculpture works, including a number of new commissions realised on site at the museum. Schmitz says : ‘The exhibition is part proposition, part declaration. Beyond proffering a general introduction to the art of a nation, this exhibition is intended to capture one moment of contemporary Australian art.’ The exhibition showcases the vital, young innovative art scene of Australia in a concentrated and intense encounter.
