Brian Martin’s exhibition The Human Status, on display at Hume Global Learning Centre, commemorates the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, when Aboriginal Australians were given the right to vote. The exhibition features 12 life-size portraits of people from Broken Hill born before the referendum and who had passed the mean life expectancy for Indigenous Australians at the time of painting.
Martin said the exhibition, launched on Sorry Day last week, explored the importance of Aboriginal elders to Australian culture.
“I hope it instils a sense of pride and reminds the general public about the history of this country,” he said.
“People have been able to recognise how important our elders are.”
