The Alice Springs Town Council has given its final approval to new rules for Aboriginal artists selling paintings in the Todd Mall.
The council was charging $205 a day for artist permits but was not enforcing the payment.
The council’s chief executive, Rex Mooney, says last night’s council meeting approved a new charge of $200 per year and new conditions to be enforced from next month.
“It will be subject to a review if any unforeseen circumstances arise and then the council will obviously review the conditions attaching to the permit,” he said.
“At this stage there’s no trial period.
“It will be introduced now.
“The council has agreed on the permit conditions and it will be part of our rangers’ activity to keep an eye on the activities.”
