The Association of Northern, Kimberley and Arnhem Aboriginal Artists (ANKAAA) is seeking capability statements/CVs from suitably qualified individuals and organisations that are interested in delivering a range of arts and business training and development activities to artists and arts workers in a number of its member Aboriginal owned and operated Art Centres.
ANKAAA is compiling its Service Providers Register, a reference tool for Art Centre Managers & staff seeking to engage qualified trainers and support services as required.
Art Centres have identified the following support and training needs:
Business development services – to assist with the implementation of actions to strengthen business operations as identified in business plans, for example:
marketing & promotion strategies, design, customer service & sales, financial literacy (money story) & financial management; bookkeeping incl MYOB; human resources support (recruitment & retention; managing effective teams; performance management); effective administration systems; submission writing; media training & support; export preparation & planning.
Governance “ general governance training for executive and staff.
Technical – data management, cataloging, digital photography, website design & management, online OH&S, chainsaw operation and safety; MYOB,
Art “ weaving, print making, silk screen printing, jewellery making, carving/sculpture, new media, colour/paint workshops, canvas preparation and stretching, bark preparation, bark strapping; pricing strategies, curatorial skills, exhibition preparation, gallery presentation, conservation/ storage, freight packaging, preparation & forwarding.
Other “ employee support services (cross cultural awareness, counselling, conflict management, effective communication, team building, living in remote communities); implementing community development initiatives.

- Knowledge and skills in the areas listed above (incl. whether accredited or non-accredited training).
- Experience working with Indigenous owned organisations in regional and remote areas to achieve successful development outcomes for individuals and communities.
- An outline of your training approach, including proven capacity to deliver services effectively in remote communities, details of flexible delivery options.
- Budget: details of your fee structure, including costs for remote area work, per diems. Please refer to any strategic linkages with other organisations/ agencies through which training fees may be supplemented.
- At least 3 current referees (Preferably one or more from Indigenous organisations).
Indigenous people and organisations are encouraged to provide their details to ANKAAA. ANKAAA is particularly interested in hearing from people who have previous experience working in or with Art Centres. However this is not a prerequisite for inclusion in the service register.
Background
ANKAAA is the peak advocacy and support agency for Indigenous arts in the Top End of Australia. It represents over 4,500 artists from 43 Art Centres located in the Tiwi Islands, Darwin, Katherine, Kimberley and Arnhem Land regions. ANKAAA assists members, Art and Craft Centre governing bodies and staff by providing services including advocacy, lobbying, consultation, resourcing, referral, and promotion and undertaking other activities to benefit artists and the sector.
ANKAAA members are Aboriginal owned and operated Art Centres which produce a large proportion of Aboriginal fine art and craft sold in Australia and internationally. Art Centres function as an important focus point for strengthening cultural identity and practice in many communities. Typically, they are managed by a director/manager who is accountable to an executive management committee comprised of Indigenous community members. Art Centres are multicultural and multilingual organisations, and significant cultural differences exist across the ANKAAA membership area. Art Centres are located in remote areas where small teams of staff have extensive management responsibilities and limited access to any training and support services. They operate in unique work environments which require dedicated service provision and education by consultants and with relevant experience and expertise.
