Art + Soul
By Emma Sleath ( Cross Media Reporter)The new three part series on Aboriginal Art debuts tonight on ABC1. Directed by Warwick Thornton and presented by Hetti Perkins, the journey begins where else but in Central Australia…
“In episode one, we start with Alice Springs and what a fantastic place to start!” said art curator Hettie Perkins to ABC TV’s Online Editor Darren Smith.
“Smack bang in the middle of Australia. From there, we go out to the Gibson Desert, and then to an artist’s studio in Brisbane, then western Arnhem land in the NT, to Ricky Maynard and Destiny Deakin in Melbourne. So, we go from a swag on the ground out in Kiwirrkura to Destiny’s lounge room in Brunswick, Melbourne.”
Hetti Perkins, daughter of well known aboriginal activist Charlie Perkins, is Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the Art Gallery of NSW. She’s also the presenter of ‘Art + Soul’, a documentary series exploring the evolution of the Aboriginal art movement over the past thirty years.
She spoke with 783 Mornings Rohan Barwick from her home in Sydney, saying it was the artists themselves who inspired the series.
