In July 2007, a partnership began between the Water Corporation and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. The partnership aimed to explore the use of artistic and creative expression as a platform to enhance awareness about water; tracing its past, present and future value in our community. The partnership’s ongoing vision is to engage audiences, foster awareness and inspire the community through art to value the most precious resource of water. This vision was recognised at the 2012 National AbaF Awards held in Perth on Tuesday night.
The partnership has led to the development and implementation of the Walter Walk and associated public and education programs and activities. The Water Walk speaks to both children and adults using selected works from the Collection, chosen for their connection to a range of water themes including sustainability, usage, water as a force of nature and spirituality. The result is a self-guided tour through the Gallery that considers both the origins of the art work alongside associated ideas and interesting
facts about water in our daily life. The Water Walk offers a meaningful visitor activity for families and Gallery visitors of all ages.
The third edition of the Water Walk guide will be launched this October. It includes all new artworks drawn from the newly rehung State Art Collection: Your Collection . In addition, education staff from the Gallery and the Water Corporation will continue to collaboratively develop and implement a range of Water Walk school-based art activities catering to three levels of the curriculum; lower primary, upper primary and lower secondary schools. The partnership also includes water themed Gallery Family Days, where not only the Water Walk, but entertainment and creative art activities are integrated with Gallery displays and exhibitions.
Stefano Carboni congratulated the Water Corporation on its visionary approach to water education and the success of the partnership with the Gallery, Aside from using art to deepen our value of water as a resource, the Water Walk is an important medium for highlighting and creating awareness about adopting sustainable practices in our daily life.
