Addressing issues such as petrol sniffing, land rights, uranium and racism in your paintings is all very well, but it’s also rewarding for the people who inspire your art to come and enjoy it. Adam Hill’s solution was to fill up a bus with Redfern residents and bring them along to his opening at Mori Gallery. The work is fiercely political, as in The Southern Toss (pictured), and designed to throw the spotlight on issues Australia should have resolved years ago. His colourful works – with hints of Reg Mombassa or Jeffrey Smart in places – are peppered with references to more traditional Aboriginal art and his manipulationof house-paint bringsan interesting texture tothe canvas.
