The last month of 2012 was relatively a relatively quiet period for the sale of Aboriginal art. There were, however, some sales worth mentioning, including Emily Kngwarreye’s My Mothers Country during the Summer Art Auction by Western Australia’s GFL Fine Art.
Sales also took place on the 1st of December in Paris by the French auction house Millon & Associates. The highest price of the sale was achieved by a Ronnie Tjampitjinpa painting which sold for Eur 10,000. Just missing out on top spot was a wonderful painting by Dorothy Napangardi Robinson that fetched Eur 9,800.
Other highlights of the Paris sale included a 100 x 150 cm painting by Ronnie Tjampitjinpa which sold for Eur 5,500, less than the estimate of Eur 7,000 – 8,000 and an Elizabeth Marks Nakamarra painting that made Eur6,000 against an estimate of Eur 6,500 – 7,500.
There were very few works of Aboriginal art in the Menzies Art Brands 6th December Australian and International Art sale. A Tracey Moffat self portrait sold for $11,045 against an estimate of $10,000 – 15,000, and a painting by Angeline Pwerle titled Bush Plum (9-905) 2005 fetched $3,682 against an estimate of $4,000 – 6,000.
One of the top five lots of Leonard Joel’s 9th December Sunday Fine Art Auction was one of Namatjira’s iconic Central Australian Landscape paintings which fetched $12,200 against an estimate of $10,000 -15,000. Canadian auction house Waddingtons sold a similar painting titled Valley Gums for CA$7380 against an estimate of CA$6000-$9000 during their 11th December International Art Auction.
