This week, the winner of one of Australia’s most prestigious prizes for Indigenous art will be announced.

The winner of the 27th Telstra National and Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Art Award will be announced on Friday, August 13.

For me, this is one of the highlights of the year, because this year is the first time I have been selected as a finalist.

My work that was accepted was entered in the New Media category and is an extension of my works on the street and in the public arena.

I have always been interested in photography: it’s a natural extension of capturing images to be reworked when I use stencils.

I’m keen to explore a lot more digital and video work, as I have a broadcast journalist background.

The use of video and digital images are a really effective tool for storytelling, and these mediums complement my work.

This competition is one of the longest-running Aboriginal art awards that I know of, and each year the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander work increases.

My piece was all about making a public statement. One of the most important aspects of the work was the location, and I believe this reinforced the message.
