In Sydney, where the countdown to January’s Sydney Festival has begun (corporate.sydneyfestival.org.au), you can still see Namatjira at the Belvoir Theatre until November 7.

Written by Scott Rankin and co-directed by Wayne Blair and Scott Rankin, this collaboration between Belvoir and Big hART tells the story of Indigenous watercolourist Albert Namatjira (1902-1959), considered radical in his day for pursuing watercolour over traditional Indigenous art forms.

Throughout each show, Namatjira’s descendants gradually paint a vast Central Australian landscape across the stage, while the play itself covers the artist’s life from his desert birth to the height of his fame.
